POETIC ASSEMBLAGE

GROUP (20%)
TASK

This assignment is required to observe and document bodily movements of the Choreographic dance with Ethnographic Drawings – plan and elevation movement mapping - in other words. The meanings of the dance shall be understood through reading but, more importantly, to be made sense of through the observation and drawing processes.

A form-making process is introduced to achieve the creative outcome of the project A Choreography-Informed Envelope for A Bodily Conscious, Affective, Expressive and Experimental Flagship Construct for a Pas de Deux.

Task A:

THE OUTCOME: Drawings: Choreographic Ethnography

Additional: GIF

Select the dance genre and choreographer: Traditional Chinese Inspired Contemporary Choreography

Understand the cultural background and meaning of the dance

Create the dancer/ choreographer’s NINE-GRID based on average body dimensions on the floor, then dance the dance within it.

The marking should consist of,

  1. Nine-Grid (scale 1:20)

  2. The ‘Pause/ Suspension’ position

  3. The ‘movement traces/ paths’

Make SIX (6) plans and SIX (6) elevations at scale 1:20 – Drawings: Choreographic Ethnography on Tervakosi papers in A3 landscape format.

Scan all the TWELVE (12) sheets of Drawings and export the drawings as GIFs (1s for each drawing sheet)

Task B:

Bodily-Conscious Form Mapping

From Form to Space and Content

Precedent Studies

The Outcome

Nodes > Line – On the 81-GRID model, connect the sticks/ nodes with thin wires to make a continuous line of the documented/ observed body movement

Nodes > Plane > Form – Add planes to the lines to volumetrically connect the dance (and movements) into a single volume build-form that corresponds to a selected Design Principle and Order – Linear / Concentric

The Form - A structural flagship construct of a build-form and an ideation construct of a manifestation from the ‘experiencing’ and ‘knowing’

The Space - A poetic assemblage for dancers to incorporate 2 dancers interacting / noninteracting

The Content (purpose) - For a bodily-conscious, affective and expressive pas de deux dance

2 Case Studies focusing on Poetic Spaces

1 Site Visit reflection writing, including pictures, notes and sketches taken at site, to relate to the book reading of any relevant chapter from The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses and answer these questions

Orthographic Drawings

All final drawings MUST be orthographic line drawings manually producedat the scale of 1:50, presented on ONE (1) A2 portrait watercolour paper

Abstract Model

  • Hand-made neatly

  • Have an A2 MDF base

Final Outcome

In a group of 5, models designed for collective efforts in research and knowledge sharing; and for individual bodily-conscious inspiration, affective experience, expression and experimental design process.
