Designing with Architectural Principles and Materiality

GROUP (30%)
TASK

In Project 2, students will work together in a group of 3 to design a Nature Observatory Post for the National Botanical Garden. The final outcome is to create a 50-square-meter space where two visitors can observe and appreciate the garden's ecosystem. The design should focus on offering an immersive and educational experience, incorporating innovative and sustainable materials and technologies.

Students must showcase creativity, thoughtful planning, and a deep understanding of architectural principles and the natural environment. The objective is to encourage the exploration of spatial qualities through architectural conceptualization, emphasizing the importance of drawing and modeling as essential design tools.

01

Large Group Task:
Site data collection
(Macro-Site)

Students are required to conduct site analysis by recording and analyzing the physical context using maps and diagrams.

02

Small Group & Individual Tasks: Diagramming Site Analysis Using Design Vignettes (Micro-Site)

Based on the site data report, students are required to work in small groups (5-6 members) by choosing two distinct micro-sites with lake views to conduct a site analysis using a design response vignettes matrix.

03

Producing Nature Observatory Post

Students are required to design a Nature Observatory Post which is a 50-square-meter space where two visitors can observe and appreciate the garden's ecosystem within the National Botanical Garden.

Final Outcome

After the completion of all constructions on-site, drawings were expeditiously generated. These drawings encompassed analytic diagrams, user experiences, orthographic drawings, exploded axonometric views and some of detailed illustrations neatly presented on A2 boards.
