RECLAIMED ARCHITECTURE
- A DANCE ANNEXE
INDIVIDUAL (60%)
TASK
Resolve basic building construction, materials, and environmental considerations.
Produce and justify a design of a small-scale community building within an open/suburban context, following analysis and exploration of the site, the user requirements, environmental sustainability, buildability, and spatial poetics.
Communicate design through effective visual and expressive verbal presentation to peer, tutors, and architects from industry.
Final Outcomes
The project outcome is a single-volume architecture (art)-built form with a curation of programmes to reclaim, preserve and promote the local native dance culture. It is an extended dance house adjacent to The Encore, where the cultural dance programme and public engagement activities can be carried out. The ‘Park-Site’ is situated opposite the art centre’s main entrance, forming another triangular relationship between the art centre, the canal and the site.
The task is to design a Dance House specifically for the given cultural group/ community and the public. The main programme is to facilitate and preserve dance culture in Malacca. The architectural design should be a standalone building.
it must be two (2) Storeys above ground level (a sunken area is allowed but not a full basement – maximum 1000mm deep). The total floor area of the design scheme must be between 350sqm to 450sqm (external/ outdoor covered area will be calculated as half). Students may decide on the floor-to-ceiling “height”. The design should employ universal design as it should be accessible to all.
